COMPETITION RULES

Monthly Competitions

  • Up to 2 photographs (prints, slides or digital on CD) may be entered in each section.
  • Photographs awarded an Acceptance or higher in previous Greymouth Photography Club competitions may NOT be re-entered.
  • An image shall only be entered in one medium; print, slide or digital on CD
  • Prints may be titled on either the face or reverse of the print or mount. Prints may be mounted / matted (please note this is NOT compulsory) and are to be no larger than 40cm x 50cm (including mount / mat). Framed prints will NOT be accepted.
  • Slides must be spotted in the lower left corner on the front of the mount when viewed in the upright position. Titles are to be written clearly on the front of the mount.
  • Digital image files must be formatted and named in accordance with the guidelines governing entry of digital images on CD.
  • Label your images to correspond with your entry form.
  • Do NOT label your photographs with your name.
  • Entries are to be handed in to the Competition Secretary no later than the corresponding monthly meeting dates.


 

DIGITAL ENTRY GUIDELINES

Digital images entered on a CD must be sized, named and
saved in accordance with the following guidelines:

  • Size of images to a maximum of 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.
  • Images must be in JPEG format.
  • Embedding a source ICC colour profile is recommended (usually sRGB).
  • For identification and sorting purposes, your image file must be named as follows -
  • COMPETITION ABBREVIATION
         OP = Open   NH = Natural History   SS = Set Subject
  • GRADE, followed by [SPACE]
         A = A-Grade   B = B-Grade   C = C-Grade
  • MEMBER ID, followed by [SPACE] [HYPHEN] [SPACE]
  • IMAGE TITLE - the title of the image may contain as many characters as needed, where there are breaks between words in the title use a space. Excessively long titles may be truncated.
  • Label your CD and CD case with your name.

COMPETITION GRADES

GRADE DESCRIPTIONS
A-GRADE This grade is for our most experienced members and whose standard of work is easily acceptable in a national photography salon / exhibition.
B-GRADE An intermediate grade for those members who are more experienced than a C-Grade member but not quite ready for A-Grade.
C-GRADE New members to our club generally start in the C-Grade and at this level comments from our competition judges are designed to encourage and teach.
JUNIOR This grade was instigated to encourage younger members in our club under the age of 18.
GRADE PROMOTIONS
B-Grade to A-Grade 35 points, including 3 Honours and 5 Merits
(to be accumulated in one year)
C-Grade to B-Grade 25 points, including 2 Honours and 4 Merits
(may be accumulated over 2 consecutive years)
  • Images gaining a place in the end-of-year competitions may be used as a Merit.
  • Images winning a trophy in the end-of-year competitions may be used as an Honours.
  • Members who have not met the promotion criteria, but who feel they are in a lower grade than they should be, may submit a selection of six images to the committee members present at a club meeting for consideration for promotion to a higher grade.
  • A member who is promoted up a grade through the points system, but who feels they do not yet have the skills required for that grade, has the option of remaining in their existing grade for one more competition year.
